Sprint-30 Recap

The 30 day challenge that changed my life.

It has been 50 days since Sprint-30, a 30 day challenge that I gave myself.

The goal of sprint 30 was to challenge myself.

Here is the tldr outcome:

I:

  • Became more disciplined

  • Journaled over 20,000+ words

  • Finished 2 books

  • Got leaner

And more.

But first... a little backstory:

The challenge started while I was still soaking up vitamin D in the Mexican sun. I had just paid for a one month stay at a room above a lovely cafe in Puerto Escondido, Mexico. And I wanted to test myself.

I had been seeing a resurgence of the 75 Hard challenge and I was inspired to take it on... but I could only guarantee 30 days due to my living accommodations. So, I modified it.

Here are the rules that I came up with, to be completed daily:

  1. Progress picture

  2. 20 minute meditation

  3. Two 45min workouts - one must be outdoor

  4. 4 liters of water

  5. 10 pages of an entrepreneurial non-fiction book

  6. 200 words of journaling

Very 75 Hard-esq.

I added two extra rules to the challenge: 20 min meditation & 200 words of journaling. I did this to increase the difficulty a little bit, but to balance this increase in difficulty I removed the diet portion of 75 Hard (*I was not about to limit myself or force a diet while in Mexico*).

So, for 30 days from July 4th to August 2nd, I challenged myself every day.

And I did it! For 30 days straight I stuck to those rules.

Here is how it went:

The first four days were a piece of cake. I was fueled with excitement. And I didn't even need discipline yet.

Here was my routine:

I started the day with my progress picture and then downed about 1 liter of water. The water was followed with a 45 minute morning walk along the beach and then either went for a run and some yoga for my other workout or hit a lift. I generally had 2-3 liters of water done before 2pm and that made it easy to get 4 down by the end of the day. I ended the day with reading + journaling before bed.

And that routine largely continued, but after a few days, it started to get challenging.

The problem child was meditation...

For the first few days, I did unguided meditation and it was INCREDIBLY difficult. I could not and would not sit still.

My regimen for the first few days was to do it early on in the day, but that didn't stick.

From days 5-15, I began to get bloated from all the water that my body WAS NOT used to drinking. My schedule for meditation was thrown off and became a lower priority (not for any particular reason, it was just easier to focus on the other rules first). And eventually the meditation got pushed all the way off until nearly the last thing.

At this point, I tried guided meditation instead of unguided, and that was easier to get through and maintain. I have never been great at sitting still, and my hunter-type tendencies didn't help either.

Eventually, I stuck with guided meditation, primarily through the Down-Dog yoga app (their guided meditations were quite fantastic).

But truth be told, that was the only serious difficulty that I faced.

But I stuck it out. I did the challenge for 30 days and abided by those rules.

Here is the outcome of the challenge:

  • Took 30 progress pictures

  • Meditated for 600 minutes or 10 hours

  • Worked out for at least 2700 minutes or 45 hours

  • Drank 120 liters of water or ~30 gallons

  • Read 300+ pages and finished two books

    • Finished The Almanack of Naval Ravikant and Meditations by Marcus Aurelius

  • Wrote 20,000+ words total in my journal

    • Averaged 677 words per day

That right there is a major success.

The biggest takeaway from this experience?

It is something I haven't hit yet during this letter: Journaling.

Journaling can and will change your life.

Out of all the rules within Sprint-30, I have only stuck to two every day since finishing the challenge.

  1. 10 Pages of reading.

  2. 200+ words of journaling

That combination is deadly.

I had never been a journal-er before Sprint-30. Never been one to diary.

This has changed me, and it has changed my life. I am now a person who journals every single day.

I have felt much greater clarity, more awareness of myself and others, and now I live my life with more intention.

My goals are clearer, and work is easier. That is the power of journaling.

If you do one thing today, it should be journaling about your day.

Journaling and its benefits deserve a separate newsletter and will be coming(soon™️), I will also be breaking down my method and what I did during sprint 30 for journaling and what has changed since I completed the challenge.

So... Am I glad I did this?

Wholeheartedly... YES.

Setting yourself a challenge and forcing yourself to stick to it daily will make an impact.

For me, it showed me that I can be disciplined. And when combining discipline with the power of compound interest will yield an incredible result.

2 books, 20 thousand words, and a better physique? Not bad for 30 days.

I formally challenge you to try Sprint-30 out yourself.

Worst case scenario? You fail, and you learn something, or best case scenario it changes your life.

You choose.

KEEP GOING
